Period and contemporary bathrooms from Mickfield, Suffolk
Bathurst & Co sells sanitaryware, brassware, bathroom furniture and accessories for good houses. Our ceramics are made in Italy. We supply them with the drawings, schedules and joinery a finished bathroom needs, from a showroom at Mickfield in mid Suffolk.
Our customers are private clients furnishing a house, the architects and interior designers who specify for them, and the builders who carry out the work, including firms working in London. Retail prices on the website include VAT. Builders, architects and designers can open an account, described on our trade page.
Two families of collections
The range is divided into period and contemporary collections. Each collection is a family of pieces drawn to sit together, so a basin, WC, bath and taps from the same collection share their proportions, edge details and glazes.
Period bathrooms
The period collections cover the styles most often asked for in older houses. Framsden is early twentieth century: rounded basins on ceramic pedestals and legs, high- and low-level cisterns, a roll-top bath and brassware to match. Thornham has grand-hotel proportions, with basins up to a 150cm double, metal washstands, wall-hung cabinets and fittings in chrome, gold or bronze. Debenham suits a bathroom of the 1920s or 1930s, with basins from 80 to 120cm, a freestanding basin, a high-level cistern and washstands.
Smaller collections fill particular needs. Cretingham is three sculpted ceramic basins, called Cocktail, Flute and Hurricane. Kettleburgh is ceramic kitchen and utility sinks, No.1, No.2 and No.3, each in several widths. Kersey is baths in oval, round, square and rectangular plan shapes. Otley is furniture made to take the Wingfield basins.
Contemporary bathrooms
The contemporary collections start with Orwell, our most complete suite: basins, wall-hung and back-to-wall WCs, bidets, a bath, taps, a shower, furniture, a mirrored cabinet and accessories. Stour has squared edges. Blyth is compact, for cloakrooms and small en-suites. Deben has the widest choice of WC and bidet sizes, which helps where a frame position or a wall is already fixed. Alde runs from a 35cm round basin to a 140cm double, with brass and steel washstands. Waveney is the gallery collection, with freestanding basins, ceramic sculptures, tables, stools and lamps.
Many pieces come in coloured and matt glazes, including matt black, green, hazel, grey, burgundy and brown, and some come in an easy-clean glaze. Brassware in several ranges is made in chrome, gold and bronze, so taps, wastes and fittings can match across a room.
The showroom at Mickfield
Ceramics are hard to judge from a screen. A glaze changes with the light, and the depth of a basin or the height of a WC pan matters more in person than on a drawing. The bathroom showroom at Mickfield, near Stowmarket, has pieces from both families on display, with glaze samples and brassware finishes. Call before you come and we will have the pieces you are interested in out and ready.
Our bathroom design service
Most of the bathrooms we supply are drawn by us first. We survey the room, produce a measured drawing and work up layout options. We check what decides whether a layout will work in practice: pipe runs, waste falls, the construction of the walls and floor, and whether a bath can be carried up the stairs. The result is a schedule of every item, from the bath to the waste and the toilet roll holder, which the builder can price and order against. The bathroom design service page explains each stage.
We can supply only, or supply and fit with our own fitters. Ask about installation in your area.
Made-to-measure bathroom furniture
Our joinery workshop at Mickfield makes vanity units, cabinets, panelling and other bathroom joinery to measure. A room can have a vanity unit built to the exact width of an alcove, or panelling set out to line up with the top of a cistern, made by the people who drew the room. Ceramics and joinery are drawn together, so the basin is cut into a top made for it and the waste position is agreed before anything goes into the workshop.
Working with builders and architects
On a project with an architect, designer or builder, we work from their drawings or produce our own. Each project has one contact here, who keeps the schedule, sends samples and arranges delivery to site. Specification sheets with dimensions and technical details are available for the pieces we sell, for the drawing set and for the trades. Deliveries can be timed to the building programme, so second-fix items arrive when they are needed and are not left lying on site.
