A wall-hung basin is fixed directly to the wall with no pedestal or cabinet beneath, which leaves the floor clear. This category holds two very different pieces: the Framsden 41cm, a small period cloakroom basin with the tap hole on the left or right, and the Thornham 120cm, a long basin in grand-hotel proportions with its overflow cover in chrome, gold or bronze.

Choosing a wall-hung basin

For a cloakroom, the Framsden 41cm is narrow enough for a WC under the stairs. Putting the tap hole to one side means the whole bowl can be used even at this size. Choose the side so the tap is not tight against the door or a return wall.

The Thornham 120cm suits a main bathroom with a long wall. It can also stand on the Thornham metal stand made for it, in chrome, gold, bronze or matt black. Both basins come in white, gloss black, matt black, matt hazel and matt green, to match the rest of the Thornham and Framsden collections.

What the wall needs

A wall-hung basin puts all its weight, and the weight of anyone leaning on it, on the fixings. Masonry is straightforward. In a stud partition, timber noggins or a purpose-made support frame have to go in before boarding, at the height set on the drawing. Plan the supply and waste to come out of the wall behind the basin. With the floor clear, the trap is on show, so choose a bottle trap in a finish to match the tap from fittings and wastes.
