A cistern has to match the pan and the way the WC is fixed. We list ten: high-level cisterns from Framsden, Thornham and Debenham; a Thornham low-level cistern; close-coupled cisterns from Framsden, Thornham, Stour and Deben; and the Deben floor cistern, also sold as a set with the Deben 56cm back-to-wall pan with bidet function.

High-level, low-level or close-coupled

A high-level cistern sits well up the wall and flushes through a long exposed pipe, worked by a pull and chain. It suits a room with good ceiling height and a period look. A low-level cistern sits just above the pan with a short flush pipe, and is easier to reach. A close-coupled cistern sits directly on the back of the pan, with no pipe at all.

Period cisterns from Framsden, Thornham and Debenham come in white, gloss black and matt glazes to match their pans. Framsden low-level cisterns, with a lever or push-button flush, are listed under fittings and wastes.

Before you order

Order the cistern from the same collection as the pan. A high- or low-level WC also needs the flush pipe and cistern fittings, which are listed separately in chrome, gold or bronze; check the ceiling height and the pan position against the pipe length. Every new WC must meet the UK water fittings regulations on flush volume.

See high- and low-level toilets and close-coupled toilets for the pans.
