A console basin is fixed to the wall at the back and carried at the front on legs, so it has the presence of a washstand without a cabinet beneath. Ours is the Framsden 100cm console basin, on aluminium legs in chrome, gold or bronze, with the ceramic in white, matt black or gloss black.

When a console basin suits the room

The open front shows the floor beneath, so a console basin makes a bathroom feel wider than a vanity unit of the same size. It suits a period room where exposed pipework is part of the look, and a contemporary room where the floor finish runs through to the wall. At 100cm there is a good ledge either side of the bowl for soap and a glass.

If you want storage below, the Framsden range also has a drawer unit and wooden cabinets made for its 100cm basin, listed under bathroom furniture. The Framsden collection carries matching taps, WCs and a roll-top bath.

What to check before ordering

The back edge is fixed to the wall, so the wall takes a share of the load. In a stud partition that means timber noggins or a fixing plate set in before the boards go on. Because the waste and supplies are on show, plan a bottle trap and isolating valves in a finish that matches the legs; traps and wastes are listed separately.

Choose the tap first. A mono mixer and a three-hole mixer need different preparation, so ask us for the specification sheet to confirm the tap holes and the outlet height before you settle on the brassware.

WCs, basins and baths are covered by the sanitation and hot water rules in Approved Document G. Call 01449 711782 if you would like us to check a piece against your plans.
