An undercounter basin is fixed beneath a stone or solid-surface worktop, so water can be wiped straight into the bowl with no rim to catch on. Ours comes in three widths, 50cm, 75cm and 90cm, which covers most cloakroom and main bathroom vanities.

When to choose an undercounter basin

It is the right choice where the worktop is the feature: a slab of stone, or a solid-surface top running the length of a vanity. The bowl drops out of sight and the top reads as one surface. It suits a busy family bathroom because there is no edge to clean round. The trade-off is that the worktop has to be made with the basin, so the decision comes early in the job.

The tap goes on the worktop or the wall, not on the basin. A wall-mounted mixer such as the Orwell wall basin mixer keeps the top clear. Deck-mounted taps need holes cut in the worktop at the template stage. See taps and mixers.

Before you order

The worktop maker needs the basin, or its template, before cutting. The cut edge should be finished and sealed, and the basin bonded and supported to the underside as the worktop maker specifies. The cabinet beneath must leave room for the bowl and the trap. If our joinery workshop is making the vanity, we build it round the basin.

The tap and waste are ordered separately from fittings and wastes, and our design service can coordinate the drawings between the worktop, the unit and the plumbing.

WCs, basins and baths are covered by the sanitation and hot water rules in Approved Document G. Call 01449 711782 if you would like us to check a piece against your plans.
